People watching was a skill which required precision, a skill which Edgar had honed since his childhood days. He could sit still for hours, so perfectly calm that he was nearly imperceptible, which was quite a feat considering his physical presence. So, when the man seated just a few spots over suddenly developed a tick in the jaw, Edgar couldn’t help but cock his head in the direction of the stranger. He couldn’t hear exactly what was happening but he could tell that the person seated across from him was certainly not pleased with the man. “I can’t decide if I’m amused or feel sorry for the poor guy,” he said, turning his attention to the person beside him. Edgar's relationship with his biological family is complicated, in every sense of the word. He was born and raised in Avignon, France, the heir to a wine empire that had grown and thrived over generations. At the age of eighteen, though, Edgar moved to the United States and has since had very little contact with his parents.

Xavier Fortier (60, fc: Mads Mikkelsen): father; CEO and face of Fortier Wines. Daiyu Yang (59, fc: Lucy Liu): mother Alexandria Fortier: (39, fc Li Jun Li): half sister, former CEO of Heira Tech, owner of Tiboulen Stables.

Daiyu and Xavier were married young. Their relationship was not based in love, but rather a business match as both families were wealthy and the merge seemed to be helpful. Shortly after their marriage, Daiyu gave birth to Alexandria and one year later, she gave birth to Edgar. It was soon discovered that Xavier was not Alex's father. The marriage never recovered from there.

After moving to the US, Edgar began to build a new family for himself. His sister is still his closest and truest friend, but others of note are:

The cocktail bar was one that Edgar frequented. At this point, he was almost sure that they had an open tab for him or his name written on some sort of frequent patron list. He could imagine it now: Edgar Yang, black card, accompanied with a photo of him.

Without waiting for instructions, Edgar made his way to a table in the back. There weren’t very many people around but still, a creature of habit and precision, he gravitated to his usual – a table situated in a corner that was in the perfect position to view the exits. This was his way: positioning himself so that he could catalogue every person who entered or exited the premises.

“2012 Bordeaux,” Edgar ordered, one finger raised to catch the eye of one of the waitresses. Alexandria - Sleep Headcanon

Alex’s sleep has always been short and light. She often doesn’t sleep much more than 5 hours. When it comes to someone sleeping at her side it takes her time to get comfortable enough with them there to fall asleep. There were rare exceptions. When he was younger, Edgar would often come into her room to sleep, away from the darkness of his room and in the comfort of hers. She got used to having him there, his steady breathing a reminder that he was ok, safe from Xavier if only for a few hours. Sam, ever the cuddler, taught her a love for snuggling. More than a few times, she’d find herself so calm curled up next to him that she couldn’t help but drift off for a little while. Amelie is the final exception to the rule. The child had always been so precious to her and Alex found that her steady breathing as she slept reminded her of young Edgar. That comforting reminder was enough to lull her into a light nap, plus the young child was the best snuggler.

Edgar was born just a few months after his half sister (his mother’s love child and a blight on his father’s name). From infancy, the young boy was tasked with carrying on the family lineage, of being something that his father could be proud of.

Though Edgar was bright and charismatic, there was nothing he could do to earn his father’s love. In fact, Xavier – owner and face of Fortier Wines, a wine label and series of wineries which had been in the family for generations – could hardly bear to look at the child. In his eyes, his son was weak (afraid of the dark and dependent on his older sister and mother).

Still, he was to be the family’s future and so, it was critical that he follow his father’s plan for his life. Plans that included an arranged business marriage, inheriting the family business, and continuing the family’s legacy. Xavier’s plan, however, did not include his son falling for in love, and with a staff member’s son, no less. When Xavier realized that his carefully laid plans could be derailed, he decided to take matters into his own hands by offering to pay for the schooling, both current and future, for the boy as long as he promised to never interact with Edgar again. It was an offer that the boy couldn’t turn down.

Xavier’s proud announcement on Edgar’s 18th birthday led to a blowout which saw Edgar severing all connection from the family and moving to NYC to live with his maternal aunt’s family. It was there that he got into the business of personal security. While Edgar didn’t necessarily enjoy being a bodyguard to the rich and famous, he excelled at it.

Family: Edgar doesn’t know what the word means entirely. Of course, he knows what the dictionary says family is, and what the media says family is, but he doesn’t actually know what a family is supposed to be. He’d always felt as if he was living in a reality tv show – on the outside, everything seemed perfect. The Fortiers had money – the result of a rather successful winery business that had been in the family for generations. The Fortier children had the best of everything – schooling, clothing, material possessions. On the inside, though, family was his own personal hell. His mother often numbed herself with pills and his father… Well, Xavier was the worst kind of monster – the kind of man who abused his wife and children simply because he could. The only bright spot in young Edgar’s life was his sister, but even she didn’t know how much he suffered.

Edgar made sure of that. Life may have been torture for him, but he would be damned if life was anything less than perfect for Alexandria. She was entitled to the picturesque home life that they’d seen on the television and obsessed over and he was determined to do everything in his power to give her that, even if it meant walking through hell.

Edgar Yang-Fortier had sold his soul to the devil. How else was he supposed to feel when the only thing he’d ever wanted, ever worked for, had been bought and sold through bribery and extortion? 

Edgar Yang-Fortier had grown up in relative luxury. For generations, the Fortier family had been renowned vintners. They’d started out in southern France only to immigrate to Paxton, Arizona a few decades back. It was then that Desert Bloom Winery was born, when Xavier Fortier met and married Daiyu Yang, the daughter of a local farmer. On paper, the match appeared to be blessed – Xavier had been born and bred into wine making knowledge, and Daiyu came from a long line of people who’d loved and cared for their parcel of land. Their two expertises, then, could be nothing less that fruitful. In practice, though, the match was ill fated from the start. 

Xavier Fortier was something of a monster who terrorized his young family behind closed doors. On top of that, over the years, he developed a gambling habit, often finding himself indebted to a variety of sources. So, it came as no surprise, then, when, on the occasion of his death a mere year ago, it was discovered that Desert Bloom Winery was so steeped in debt that there was simply no other option than to sell. 

It was then that Obsidian Holdings came knocking. Edgar had met and had a brief fling with Lindsey Gallagher during their college days, but college had ended and he’d returned to Paxton with the intent of taking over the winery, and had hardly thought twice about the woman in the years that followed. Finding her on his doorstep days after his father’s funeral had come as a surprise, but her offer had felt like an inevitability. 

Without the knowledge of his siblings, Edgar accepted the offer – sell the winery in all but name to Obsidian Holdings and continue to operate business as usual. The winery would host events when Obsidian needed and the Fortier-Yang family would become donors to the cause, but in the way that it counted – for pride’s sake – they would be able to hold on to their legacy.

The offer was clearly extortionary. Edgar could see all of the ways this could go up in flames, but he’d been given an opportunity to redeem and secure his family’s legacy and he would take it even if it required making a deal with the devil. His siblings aren’t aware of the inner workings of the deal. In their minds, he’s simply accepted a loan which has allowed him to push off some of the business’s debt for the time being, but Edgar knows better – he’s doomed himself all for the chance to save his family, and he’d do it again if he had to.

So, when the truth of how deeply in the hole Xavier had driven them came to light, Edgar felt like he needed to do whatever was necessary to fix it.

Edgar waas born in Avignon, France into wealth. The Fortier family were well known in the wine business and had been for generations. As with his father before him, Edgar was raised to know the business from the inside out as he would one day inherit it.

Xavier Fortier was not the kind of father a child could love and often found fault in everything Edgar did.

Needless to say, Edgar moved away the first chance he could. At 18, he moved to the states to live with his mother's family. Here, he attended college and begin to build the network connections that would later come in handy when establishing his business.

During his 20s, the business focused on providing security for lesser known celebrities and those of a social class who could afford it.

It was also around this time that he met his spouse. Edgar hadn't been looking for a serious relationship, so he was really caught off guard, but after having separated himself from his family, this person became his entire world. They married, and soon, talks turned towards having children.

Though Edgar felt fulfilled in his personal life, he never felt fulfilled professionally. It was because of this that his marriage began to fall apart. In an attempt to fix things, Edgar brought in a business whom he trusted to take the lead in expanding the company towards building and installing home security systems so that their client base could expand. At the same time, the family made the decision to move to Denver, Colorado hoping that being closer to his spouse's family would take some of the strain off of their marriage.

Twelve years later, Edgar's marriage has ended in divorce and he finds himself feeling stagnant. He and his ex have come to terms with co-parenting, and he and his business partner have established a flow to the business, but somehow, something still feels missing.
